Abstract

Background: Foreign body within vicinity of the heart poses a great risk of mechanical injury to the thoracic cage and its viscera.
Case Report: Foreign body within vicinity of the heart poses a great risk of mechanical injury to the thoracic cage and its viscera. A chest radiograph revealed two needles in the chest of a 41-year-old asymptomatic male. Detailed visualization of the foreign bodies was performed with ECG-gated MDCT. Two metallic objects were found: one on the thoracic wall anterior to right ventricle parallel to fi fth left rib, the second needle located in the interventricular septum. In the presented case, ECG-gated MDCT allowed proper visualization of foreign bodies in the heart.
Conclusions: Detailed visualization of the needles and their relation to chambers of the heart was an important part of diagnostic algorithm in this patient. To our knowledge, this is the fi rst report of intracardiac needle diagnosed with ECG-gated MDCT.
