Chemical constituents of pulmonary surfactant are described with particular attention focused on the role of proteins. Cellular mechanisms involved in surfactant secretion onto the surface of aveolar epithelial cells and the mode of its regulation are also discussed. Additionally, factors responsible for stimulation and inhibition of surfactant secretion are presented particularly those activated by receptors as well as those which are physical and chemical.

Keywords: surfactant secretion, surfactant proteins, lamellar bodies, alveolar type II cells, beta-adrenergic receptors, purinoreceptors, vasopressin receptors, Calcium
