The authors present contemporary views of the risk of surgery in the elderly. Analysing the incidence of coexisting diseases in this group of patients, they emphasise the importance of a thorough evaluation of circulatory and respiratory efficiency and renal fuction, and the significance of multiple classifications of perioperative risk factors which allow a precise precidiction of complications in the perioperative period.
