Abstract

Septal defects are the most frequently diagnosed congenital heart diseases in the pediatric and adult populations. The aim of this study was to demonstrate the existence of an alternative surgical method - right anterolateral minithoracotomy, in the treatment of atrial septal defects. Right anterolateral minithoracotomy is an alternative to the most commonly used midline sternotomy and frequently reported right lateral thoracotomy techniques. This being due to its cosmetic advantages, that are extremely important, especially in the case of young female patients. One must consider whether this modified procedure could be used during incisionless operations. In conclusion, right anterolateral minithoracotomy is a surgical alternative to the more and more popular heart catheterization ASD-closure techniques.
